Samaje Perine Up For Pepsi Rookie Of The Week Honors

Washington's first-year running back easily had the best performance of his rookie season, averaging more than five yards per carry along with his first 100-yard game.

Entering Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, the Washington Redskins were eager to see how Samaje Perine would respond to having an expanded role.

While Perine had already notched a start under his belt against the Oakland Raiders in Week 3, he was bumped into the lead back role following Rob Kelley's placement on Injured Reserve last week.

Perine would respond with a breakout game, recording 23 carries for 117 yards and his first career rushing touchdown. Due to his efforts, Perine is a nominee for Week 11 Pepsi Rookie of the Week.

"Samaje ran hard, man, I was impressed with Samaje's running style," Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said on Sunday after the game. "I figured the type of player he is. He'll get better with more carries. That's what he showed today."

Perine's 117 rushing yards were the most by a Redskins running back since Week 11 of the 2016 season. In the first quarter he recorded a 30-yard carry, his longest of the season.

He credited the offensive line for his success against New Orleans' defense.

"They played a great game," Perine said. "I couldn't ask for anything more. I feel like I left a couple yards out there, but overall I feel like we played great as a unit."
