Samuels Earns Fourth Pro Bowl Nod

Chris Samuels has been named to the NFC's Pro Bowl squad. He will represent the Redskins as a backup left tackle.

Samuels was the only Redskins player named to the Pro Bowl.

However, the team had four players listed as alternates: safety Sean Taylor is a first alternate and tight end Chris Cooley, punt returner Antwaan Randle El and linebacker Marcus Washington are third alternates.

Alternates can get a spot on the Pro Bowl roster only if there is an injury to a starter or reserve.

For Samuels, it is his fourth trip to the league's annual all-star game. He has previously earned invites in 2001-02 and 2005.

Samuels has started 14 games this season at left tackle and has been instrumental in an offensive line that has helped the Redskins rank fifth in the NFL in rushing. The unit has allowed only 18 sacks and has paved the way for running back Ladell Betts to rush for four straight 100-yard games.

The NFL's best will meet in Hawaii on Saturday, Feb. 10 for the 2007 Pro Bowl. The game, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, will be broadcast on CBS at 6 p.m. ET.

Samuels and Santana Moss were Pro Bowlers last year. Marcus Washington was the Redskins' only Pro Bowl representative in 2004.

On Monday, head coach Joe Gibbs lamented that so few Redskins would have a chance to make the Pro Bowl this year.

"There are always guys who had outstanding years and who should make the Pro Bowl," Gibbs said. "Up here, that normally gets lost if your team is not winning football games. It's one of the things I hate because it's a disappointment to the fans and everybody else.

"I'm hoping that at some point we can get on a roll and people can recognize our players."

As in years past, the squad selection process consisted of votes from coaches, players and fans. The consensus ballots of NFL fans, players and coaches each counted one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters representing the AFC and NFC.
