Sellers, Thrash Ruled Out vs. Chargers

H-back Mike Sellers and wide receiver James Thrash will not play in this Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, team officials said.

The Redskins confirmed on Monday that Sellers sustained a hairline fracture in his ribs. All tests on his kidneys and other organs came back fine. The injury is expected to sideline Sellers for at least one game, and possibly more.

Sellers was taken to Washington Hospital Center after Sunday's 16-13 loss to Oakland at FedExField. He spent Sunday night at the hospital for further evaluation and was released on Monday. He was back at Redskins Park in the afternoon and was reported to be feeling "extremely sore," according to head coach Joe Gibbs.

Sellers sustained the injury midway through the fourth quarter on punt coverage. He was injured on a block by the Raiders' Isaiah Ekejiba, who was flagged for an illegal block above the waist.

Sellers lay on the field for several minutes and had to be helped off the field. He came back into the game--on his own, without authorization by team athletic trainers--on the next special teams play, a Redskins punt return.

Sellers was flagged for offensive holding on Ekejiba.

"Mike is one of our best football players, particularly on teams as a leader, and he's one of the toughest guys I've ever seen," Gibbs said after Sunday's game. "We told him he was out, and the next thing you know he's back in there. He had put himself back in the game because he felt like he could go.

"That's a situation where you have to hold your poise. I talked to him about it [on Monday]. You can't afford to get penalties. He was so geared up, and it did cost us."

Sellers also had a death in the family on Saturday and he was scheduled to leave FedExField immediately after the game and go straight to the airport to be with his relatives, Gibbs said.

"We're praying for him," Gibbs said.

Meantime, Thrash sustained a hamstring injury in the second quarter of the Raiders game. The injury is expected to sideline Thrash for at least one game. Afterwards, he will be listed as day to day.

Said Gibbs: "That's something that looks better today that we thought it did last night. I'm sure it'll be tough for him to play next week, but we'll have to look at what point he can come back to play."

Thrash said on Monday that it was the first hamstring injury of his career. He had not ruled himself out of playing this Sunday.

"I'm still a little sore," Thrash said. "Right now, I'm just going in for treatment as much as I can and hopefully I'll heal as fast as possible."

Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin and running back/kick returner Ladell Betts, both of whom were deactivated for Sunday's game due to injury, are day to day, Gibbs said. Griffin has been sidelined the last three games with a hip injury and Betts has a knee injury.

Of Griffin and Betts, Gibbs said: "We'll probably take it toward the end of the week [before making a decision] on whether they'll play."
