Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, in an interview with Sirius Radio, said Clinton Portis "is our running back."

He said he's not concerned with "differences of opinion" or the recent past, and that he knows the production that Portis had during their two years with Denver.

"I don't go back to what happened the last couple of years or listen to differences of opinion," Shanahan said. "I just know what Clinton did for me."

Portis played the first two years of his career for Shanahan in Denver before being traded to the Redskins for Champ Bailey.

Shanahan said he expects Portis to be "in great shape" and "hopefully he can help us win."

Portis missed eight games last season, felled in mid-November by a concussion.

Portis finished with 494 rushing yards on 124 carries and one touchdown. His best game was in Week 6 vs. Kansas City when he had 15 carries for 109 yards.

He ranks second in club history in rushing yards (6,597), second in rushing attempts (1,613), third in rushing touchdowns (44) and 10th in total touchdowns (47).
