Three Reasons Why Your Resolutions Fail

WOW_01.22.18

We are officially a few weeks in to 2018, meaning that many of us are knee-deep in taking on our resolutions. About 76% of resolutions made in the New Year are pertaining to health and fitness goals, and as a health and fitness professional and personal trainer it's also the time of year that I see gyms bursting at the seams with eager resolution-ers. Here's the thing...usually by March those seams have returned back to normal with about 40% of resolutions broken after January 31st. We are coming off the weekend of our WOW New Year, New you work out. After a great and fun sweat with me and my awesome team of trainers, I sat down with the ladies to discuss three reasons why people fail at seeing their resolutions come to pass. If you missed it, here you are!

  1. They make FLIMSY resolutions. Your resolution should be full of concrete details. There should be a plan of action imbedded in your resolution as opposed to some big and vague dream that you hope to come by. For example, instead of resolving to lose weight this year, you should resolve to get at least 30 minutes of deliberate exercise at least three days a week. This ensures that you are actively working towards your "dream" and not just hoping a magical genie plants you at the finish line of 'goal weight'.
  2. They make UNREALISTIC resolutions. It's great to have pie-in-the sky goals; however it's important not to overshoot reality. Setting too ambitious goals is only going to overwhelm and discourage you from continuing to work towards it when the road to the finish line becomes daunting day to day. For example, instead of resolving to lose 20lbs in one month, resolve to lose 2 lbs. per week.
  3. They have no FOLLOW-THROUGH. Lack of follow-through is probably the top reason why many resolutions never come to pass. Before making a resolution, it's important that you make your mind up to be committed through the end of the process. If you're making a resolution for the sake of making a resolution, you may not succeed. It's also important to find your motivation and keep it near so you can revisit it when your zeal is not as strong.

My goal is to help women all over the world feel accomplished and empowered on December 31, 2018 as they realize they've made landfall to their health and fitness goals. That feeling...Priceless!
