Another day, another Super Bowl list.
This time, USA Today’s For The Win blog decided to round up all the rosters from the previous 49 Super Bowl matchups and put together the best 22 – 11 on offense, 11 on defense – to field for an all-time Super Bowl squad.
The criteria was based particularly on the performances in the Super Bowl itself.
While no Redskins were chosen on the defensive side of the ball, three make the list on offense. Naturally, two offensive lineman, this year's Hall of Fame finalist, Joe Jacoby and Jim Lachey, make up that impenetrable 1991 offensive line.
Lachey (at left tackle) and Jacoby (at right tackle) help bookend the line, which also features Gene Upshaw, Mark Stepnoski and Larry Little.
"Washington gets two tackles on the team from the 1991 squad, which dominated the Bills formidable front seven in Super Bowl XXVI," writes the article's author Steven Ruiz. "The likes of Bruce Smith, Darryl Talley and Cornelius Bennett could not get close to Mark Rypien, providing him with enough time to carve up Buffalo's secondary en route to winning MVP."
Rounding out the list of wide receivers is Ricky Sanders, who FTW claims often gets forgotten from the 1988 Super Bowl victory that featured Doug Williams and Timmy Smith.
"Sanders quietly put up one of the best performances by a receiver in Super Bowl history, doing most of his damage in the team's record-setting second quarter. Sanders caught an 80-yard touchdown for Washington's first score and followed that up with a 50-yard score 10 minutes later. He finished with nine catches for 191 yards."
He does rank Marcus Allen above Timmy Smith for running back, which is only slightly more frustrating considering Allen's performance helped beat the Redskins in 1984.
