Trent Murphy Writes Blog About Position Changes

So far, it's been a crazy offseason for outside linebacker Trent Murphy.

It's been so crazy, that Murphy decided to write a blog about it on his personal website.

In Murphy's blog, entitled "From The Edge, And Back Again," he takes readers behind the scenes of his move from outside linebacker, to defensive end and back.

Murphy says it was a little jarring at first, being told, "We don't want you to do what you've been doing," but, being the team player that he is, Murphy accepted the "challenge" with open arms.

"I've always held true to my relentless personality," Murphy said. "I'll do whatever a coach asks me to do. I have that tenacious attitude to accept whatever challenge they throw my way. So I got over the mixed feelings pretty quickly. In the end, there was no way I was passing up the challenge they were presenting to me."

Murphy goes into detail about his training regimen, and how he had to take everything to the max with his workouts and his diet, in order to put on some extra weight and be in even better condition.

"It was definitely intimidating to go from the top of the pecking order to a new position where you don't really know how things work, and have to work your way back up from the bottom," Murphy said. "All that unknown can eat you up. But I've never been one to turn down hard work."

Murphy took the change well, and so did his defensive line mates, who couldn't wait to start working with him, and get him up to speed on how they do things up front.

"Thanks to those guys, as well as [defensive line] Coach [Robb] Akey, I got comfortable with the new D-line position pretty quickly. Coach Akey was super helpful in the transition. We were watching film pretty much all day, every day. He was always texting or calling me, or sitting aside and helping me with those little extra things I needed to work on, which I really appreciated."

Once outside linebacker Junior Galette went down with an Achilles injury, Murphy's role had to change, because the team needed someone capable enough to make up for Galette's loss.

That capable person was Murphy, who was told that he'd be moving back to outside linebacker.

"I didn't ask a lot of questions about why they wanted this change and what happened, but I was ready to answer the bell," Murphy said.

No matter where he lines up on the defense, Murphy is grateful for the opportunity he's gotten with the Redskins, and he's looking for more this coming season.

"I'm happy to add value wherever they need me," Murphy said.
