On Sunday, December 15th, the Redskins honored two Sailors of the United States Navy. For the seventh official home game of the season, the Washington Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles Sunday showdown featured a special Salute to Service Moment presented by USAA. Aviation Boatswains Mate Handeling Chief Petty Officer William Smith and Fire Controlman Senior Chief Petty Officer Dawn Moguel were the USAA guests of honor chosen to participate in the USAA Salute to Service Moment.
During the first quarter of action, Chief Petty Officer Smith and Senior Chief Petty Officer Moguel were featured on the Redskins HD scoreboard waving from the field as the Redskins crowd took a moment to give them a standing ovation in appreciation for their sacrifice and service to our nation.
William H. Smith Jr, Aviation Boatswains Mate Chief Petty Officer
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia on the 3rd of December 1980, and is a native of College Park, Maryland. William has a spirited attitude and a drive to complete the mission. He joined the United States Navy the 21st of July 2003. His decision did not come lightly because his cousin Robert died while in combat supporting the United States Army as a Ranger. With a heart full of commitment he went into the recruiting station in Silver Spring, Maryland and completed the sign up process. He discussed various opportunities with his recruiter and working on the flight deck struck his interest. He attended ATD School in Pensacola, Florida where he was trained on flight deck safety and got his first taste of the ABH rate.
Thirteen years later his duty stations have included the: USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71); NAS Sigonella, Italy, USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77), Norfolk, Virginia and Now serves at NSA South Potomac in the Navay District Washington. He has served honorably for 16 years 5 months. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards) and 4 good Conduct Medals.
Dawn Moguel, Fire Controlman Senior Chief Petty Officer
A Philadelphia native who joined the Navy in August 2000 at the age of 18 SPCO Moguel has served on five ships (USS Higgins, Benfold, Halsey, Vella Gulf and Gonzalez). She's been stationed in San Diego CA, Norfolk VA, Great Lakes IL and Moorestown NJ. Currently, she's stationed and resides in Dahlgren, VA, at Aegis Training and Readiness Center where she teaches Sailors that are preparing to return to the fleet.
