Redskins tight end Vernon Davis grew up in Washington D.C., and was a star athlete at Dunbar High School before staying local and heading to the University of Maryland to excel as a top football prospect.
So, his decision to sign with Washington last week is laced with some nostalgia for sure, an opportunity to spend a season, and maybe more, back home with friends and family.
"Washington, D.C., has always been a great place to me," Davis told ESPN 980. "You know, I've had a great experience growing up in D.C. – there's been a lot of trials and tribulations that I had to fight through – but I managed to come out on top just by keeping my faith, working hard and just being a good man. And that's what it's all about. But I totally look forward to getting back to Washington, D.C., so I can get out in the community and win some football games."
Davis actually grew up a Redskins fan while he was outrunning the competition at Dunbar. He posted an Instagram throwback photo this week winning the 100-meter dash in the 2003 DCIAA championships, one of several strong finishes there.
When pressed about what his 40-time would be today, Davis didn't hesitate.
"I'd give you a 4.36. I'm not kidding. I'm not kidding – I'm being serious," he said.
If his sweatshirt and breathing mask are any indication, he's still feeling (or at least trying to feel) like his former self.
