The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation on Tuesday helped in donating nearly $60,000 worth of athletic equipment for local Richmond organizations.

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation partnered with Good Sports to donate more than $58,000 worth of athletic equipment to eight Richmond-based organizations to create opportunities for local youth to be physically active in a presentation at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Va., on Tuesday afternoon.

Since the two organizations have partnered together, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and Good Sports have provided $115,000 of equipment, apparel and footwear that has impacted nearly 68,000 kids.

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation aims to make a positive and measurable impact in the lives of children that need it most, and has given back nearly $20MM since its inception in 2000. Good Sports is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to give all kids the lifelong benefits of sport and physical activity. The partnership donated equipment, including football helmets, shoulder pads and footballs, that is often out of the reach of the children who need it most.

"The Redskins have hopped in really seeing the need of the community, both in Richmond right now and in Washington D.C., and they've been that huge support that's allowed us to make these types of donations," said Michael Wright, community partnerships manager for Good Sports.

The Redskins ownership group, including Dan Snyder, along with Redskins Leadership Council Members met with local community organizers, youth groups and young athletes to present the much needed equipment. The beneficiaries are Albert Hill Middle School, Binford Middle School, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, Chamberlayne Packers Youth Football & Cheer, Peter Paul Development Center, Richmond Bulldogs, Richmond Parks & Recreation and the YMCA of Greater Richmond.

"We've identified the great need in our community, both in the D.C area as well as Richmond, so for us it's just an opportunity to be able to help kids get active, be able to work with our nonprofit partners that we're engaging with on and off the field, and so we're excited to be able to provide everything that they need in order to give kids opportunities," said Jane Rodgers, Executive Director of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation. "It's not just about football for us, you'll see that there's a variety of different sports equipment here because we know that not every kid is going to want to play football. We love football, but we want them to be able to have options and make sure that they have safe, effective gear to use."

For a generation more involved in digital technology than ever before, providing the opportunity for young men and women to be physically active while learning the values of team sports along with their peers is paramount.

"You know, being physically active as a child is one of the most important things that you can do," Wright said. "We're seeing a more sedative and a more sedentary lifestyle for these kids, playing video games, eating badly, not getting the right nutrition, and we're really out there to combat that and the Redskins Charitable Foundation has been a huge partner in allowing us to be able to do that."
