WHM Spotlights - Jean Medina

Jean Medina

Chief Communications Officer

Jean Medina

Time at the Commanders: 2.5 years

Describe what you do with the organization. What's your favorite part about what you do?

I oversee communications, including public relations, media relations and football communications. I also work on executive positioning, message development and crisis and issues management. In short, I promote and protect the Commanders. My favorite part of my job is helping to develop the next generation of talent. I think that's the most important part of being a leader in any organization.

What's a work-related accomplishment that you're really proud of?

I'm really proud of the work of the entire team in the transition to the new ownership team. We collectively and flawlessly executed a series of events following the League meeting to introduce new owners, welcome fans and celebrate with our VIP suites and season ticket members. That work set the stage for the excitement that quickly built around the team.

What inspires you to come to work each day?

The opportunity to make a difference inspires me to come to work each day. That and the opportunity to work with an amazing team of colleagues, who are do great at what they do.

How has your background shaped who you are today?

I was raised by a single mom, who always worked multiple jobs when I was growing up. She taught me the importance of hard work. She had a "why not" attitude that to me translates to not telling yourself no before you try something new, go for a promotion, or apply for a new job. There are so many people in the world who will tell you no. You shouldn't be the one saying it to yourself.

What does this month mean to you?

This month is great to celebrate how much women have accomplished, but it's also a reminder of how far we have to go. As the mother to three amazing young women, I want my daughters to be able to do whatever they want to do, and to feel heard, recognized and included wherever they may go. I want that for everyone's children. As a leader who is a woman, I have the responsibility to lift other women up and make space for them (as do all leaders, in my opinion). In my career, I too often have seen women not supporting other women because they see themselves as competition as there are only so many women in higher roles. It's counterproductive for women to see themselves as fighting for the same piece of pie. The answer is to make a bigger pie.

What quote or mantra do you live by?

Work hard and be nice to people. It sounds simple, but it's so important.
